Overview

Sorghum bicolor subsp. drummondii pollen, commonly known as Sudan grass pollen, is utilized as an allergenic extract for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. In clinical practice, it is employed in skin prick testing to confirm hypersensitivity in patients presenting with seasonal allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, or asthma. For treatment, it is used in allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT), where increasing doses of the extract are administered subcutaneously to induce immunological tolerance. This process involves shifting the immune response from a Th2-dominated profile to a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) response, leading to the production of blocking IgG4 antibodies and a reduction in allergen-specific IgE-mediated mast cell degranulation.
