Overview
Sotagliflozin is an orally administered small molecule drug that acts as a dual inhibitor of sodium-glucose co-transporter 1 (SGLT1) and sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2). By inhibiting SGLT2 in the kidney, it reduces renal glucose reabsorption, leading to increased urinary glucose excretion. Inhibition of SGLT1 in the intestine delays glucose absorption, blunting postprandial hyperglycemia. Sotagliflozin is approved for reducing the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization for heart failure, and urgent heart failure visits in adults with heart failure or with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease who have additional cardiovascular risk factors. It has also been studied as an adjunct to insulin therapy for glycemic control in type 1 diabetes[3][5][6][8].
