Overview

SOU-003 is a topical formulation of ebselen, a small molecule glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mimic, developed by Sound Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. Ebselen is a synthetic organoselenium compound that mimics the activity of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which plays a critical role in protecting cells from oxidative damage by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS). In the inner ear, oxidative stress is a primary driver of hair cell death and subsequent hearing loss following exposure to loud noise or ototoxic drugs. By mimicking GPx activity, SOU-003 aims to neutralize ROS and mitigate inflammatory responses in the cochlea. While Sound Pharmaceuticals has primarily focused on the clinical development of the oral formulation (SPI-1005), SOU-003 was designed for localized otic delivery to provide targeted protection of the auditory system.
