Soy isoflavones are naturally occurring plant-derived compounds, specifically phytoestrogens, that are being investigated by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) for their potential health benefits. The primary active ingredients are the small molecule isoflavones genistein, daidzein, and glycitein. These compounds are structurally similar to 17β-estradiol and function as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). They bind to both estrogen receptor alpha (ER-α) and estrogen receptor beta (ER-β), with a significantly higher affinity for ER-β. In clinical research, such as the Phase 2 trial NCT00200824, these isoflavones are studied for their ability to influence surrogate markers of breast and prostate cancer, as well as their impact on bone mineral density and quality of life in postmenopausal women and men undergoing androgen ablation therapy. As a nutraceutical product rather than a regulated pharmaceutical, soy isoflavones represent a dietary approach to managing hormone-sensitive conditions and bone health.
