Overview

Soy isoflavone aglycones (NHRI Taiwan) is an investigational phytoestrogen formulation developed by the National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan for the treatment of osteopenia in postmenopausal women. The formulation consists of a daily dose of 300 mg of isoflavone aglycones, specifically comprising 172.5 mg of genistein and 127.5 mg of daidzein. These compounds are small molecule phytoestrogens that are structurally analogous to 17β-estradiol and act as agonists at estrogen receptors, which are their primary biological targets. The compound was evaluated in the Taiwan Isoflavone Multicenter Study (TIMS), a 2-year, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 431 postmenopausal women aged 45-65 years. The study aimed to investigate the effect of these aglycones on bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine and total proximal femur. However, clinical results indicated that the treatment failed to significantly prevent BMD decline compared to placebo, despite a significant increase in serum concentrations of isoflavone metabolites in the treatment group.
