Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Soy isoflavone extract is a dietary supplement and botanical extract derived from soybeans (Glycine max) or soy germ, containing a mixture of phytoestrogens, primarily genistein, daidzein, and glycitein, along with their respective glycosides (genistin, daidzin, and glycitin). Due to their structural similarity to 17β-estradiol, soy isoflavones act as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), preferentially binding to estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) over estrogen receptor alpha (ERα). This selective binding allows them to exert weak estrogenic effects in tissues where ERβ is predominant, such as bone and the cardiovascular system, while potentially acting as antagonists in tissues with high ERα expression. Soy isoflavone extract is widely used to alleviate vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes and night sweats) associated with menopause, support bone mineral density to prevent osteoporosis, and promote cardiovascular health in peri- and postmenopausal women.
