Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This soy isoflavone supplement is a dietary supplement containing a mixture of genistein, daidzein, and glycitein (100 mg total per day). It was evaluated in a Phase 4 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (the SOYA study) conducted by the American Lung Association Asthma Clinical Research Centers (ALA-ACRC) to determine its efficacy in patients with poorly controlled asthma. The supplement, provided by Archer Daniels Midland, was hypothesized to provide anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. However, the study, which enrolled 386 participants aged 12 and older, found no significant improvement in lung function (FEV1), asthma symptoms, or clinical outcomes compared to placebo. Consequently, the use of soy isoflavone supplements is not recommended for the management of poorly controlled asthma.
