soybean oil + fish oil

This combination parenteral nutrition regimen consists of a standard soybean oil-based lipid emulsion (Intralipid) and a fish oil-based lipid emulsion (Omegaven). It is primarily investigated for the treatment and prevention of Parenteral Nutrition Associated Liver Disease (PNALD) in adults. Standard soybean oil emulsions are rich in omega-6 fatty acids and phytosterols, which are thought to contribute to cholestasis and liver injury in long-term parenteral nutrition patients. The addition of fish oil, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), is intended to provide anti-inflammatory effects, reduce oxidative stress, and improve bile flow, thereby reversing or mitigating liver damage. This specific regimen was evaluated in a Phase 3 trial led by Johane Allard at the University Health Network.
