Overview
Lipofundin LCT/MCT is an intravenous lipid emulsion developed by B. Braun Melsungen AG for use in parenteral nutrition. It consists of a 1:1 physical mixture of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), typically derived from coconut oil, and long-chain triglycerides (LCT), derived from soybean oil. This formulation provides a balanced supply of energy and essential fatty acids, including linoleic acid (n-6 PUFA) and alpha-linolenic acid (n-3 PUFA). The MCT component is rapidly cleared from the bloodstream and oxidized for energy, while the LCT component provides essential fatty acids necessary for structural integrity and biochemical processes. It is indicated for patients who cannot receive adequate enteral nutrition and is used to support patients at risk for parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease (PNALD) or cholestasis. In clinical research, it frequently serves as a standard-of-care comparator for newer lipid emulsions, such as those enriched with omega-3 fish oils.
