Overview

Soybean oil emulsion is a sterile intravenous lipid formulation used as a source of calories and essential fatty acids in patients requiring parenteral nutrition. It consists primarily of refined soybean oil—a mixture of triglycerides rich in polyunsaturated (mainly linoleic acid) and monounsaturated (mainly oleic acid) fatty acids—emulsified with egg phospholipids and stabilized with glycerin. The mechanism of action is to provide essential fatty acids and energy for metabolic processes when oral or enteral nutrition is not possible or insufficient. Soybean oil emulsions are the only FDA-approved lipid formulations for clinical use in parenteral nutrition[1][2][3][4][5][8]. Major brand names include Nutrilipid, Intralipid, and Clinolipid.
