Overview

SP-002 refers to two distinct investigational drugs in development by different companies for cancer indications. The first, developed by Stamford Pharmaceuticals, is a replication-deficient adenoviral vector (serotype 5, Ad5) encoding the therapeutic cytokine Interferon-gamma. This gene therapy is designed to transduce tumor cells and locally produce Interferon-gamma, aiming to widen the therapeutic window and reduce systemic toxicity compared to recombinant protein therapies. It is being developed as an intralesional treatment for nodular basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), particularly those in high-risk anatomical sites or patients unsuitable for surgery[1][4][7]. The second drug named SP-002, developed by Simcere Pharmaceutical Group, is a highly selective small molecule inhibitor of ubiquitin-specific protease 1 (USP1). It targets homologous recombination-deficient (HRD) tumors and has shown low hematotoxicity risk in preclinical studies. This version of SP-002 is also under investigation for basal cell carcinoma[2][3].
