SP0237 is an experimental, next-generation mRNA-based influenza vaccine developed by Sanofi. Unlike first-generation mRNA flu vaccines that primarily target the hemagglutinin (HA) protein, SP0237 is designed to encode both HA and neuraminidase (NA) antigens. This dual-antigen approach is intended to elicit a broader and more durable immune response, potentially improving protection against a wider range of influenza strains and addressing the reduced efficacy against influenza B strains observed with HA-only mRNA platforms. The vaccine utilizes lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology for delivery. SP0237 entered Phase 1/2 clinical trials in 2024 as a successor to Sanofi's earlier candidate, SP0273. However, in early 2026, Sanofi announced the deprioritization of its seasonal mRNA flu program, including SP0237, as part of a strategic shift to focus on other vaccine priorities, such as combination respiratory vaccines.
