Overview

sp1 decoy oligodeoxynucleotides are synthetic, double-stranded DNA oligonucleotides designed to inhibit the transcription factor Specificity Protein 1 (Sp1) by mimicking its DNA-binding consensus sequence. These molecules function as a "decoy," binding Sp1 and preventing it from interacting with target gene promoters, thus downregulating the expression of genes under Sp1 control. This targeted gene downregulation has been shown to reduce angiotensin receptor expression and blood pressure in hypertension models, modulate inflammatory responses, and impact vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. The approach falls under the broader category of decoy ODN (oligodeoxynucleotide) technology, which is a gene therapy, though sp1 decoy ODNs are not a branded pharmaceutical product and are generally used as research tools or investigational agents in preclinical research[1][3][5][7].
