SPARC1401

SPARC1401 is a topical gel formulation of tizanidine, a centrally acting muscle relaxant, developed by Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company (SPARC). It was specifically designed for the treatment of moderate to severe acute low back pain, with the goal of providing localized therapeutic effects while minimizing systemic side effects like sedation and hypotension that are common with oral tizanidine. SPARC1401 acts as an agonist at alpha-2 adrenergic receptors. The drug was evaluated in a Phase 2 randomized, double-blind, placebo- and active-controlled trial (NCT04101370) comparing three dose levels of the gel to oral tizanidine and placebo. In early 2022, SPARC announced that the development of SPARC1401 would be discontinued as the Phase 2 study did not meet its primary efficacy endpoint.
