Sparfloxacin is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, as well as sinusitis. It acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase, an essential enzyme for DNA replication, repair, deactivation, and transcription in bacteria. This inhibition disrupts bacterial cell division and leads to cell death. Sparfloxacin exhibits broad-spectrum activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. It has been withdrawn from the U.S. market due to safety concerns but may still be available elsewhere[1][2][3][5][6].
