Overview
SparVax-L is a next-generation, recombinant protein-based anthrax vaccine developed by Altimmune (following its merger with PharmAthene). The vaccine is based on a proprietary recombinant protective antigen (rPA) technology and is formulated as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) product to improve room-temperature stability and simplify storage requirements for biodefense stockpiling. Designed as a two-dose regimen, SparVax-L aimed to provide rapid protection against *Bacillus anthracis* infection with fewer doses and a better safety profile compared to existing vaccines. Development was primarily funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), but the program was discontinued in 2019 after the U.S. government shifted its strategic focus toward post-exposure vaccines.
