SPB08007 is an experimental small molecule mitophagy activator currently being investigated for the treatment of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and neonatal hyperoxic lung injury. By upregulating mitophagy, SPB08007 promotes the selective degradation of damaged mitochondria, which prevents the release of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) into the cytoplasm. This reduction in cytosolic mtDNA inhibits the activation of pro-inflammatory innate immune pathways, including cGAS-STING, TLR9, and the inflammasome. In preclinical mouse models of neonatal hyperoxia, administration of SPB08007 has been shown to mitigate alveolar and vascular simplification, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic strategy to prevent chronic lung injury in premature infants.
