SPD491 was an experimental, non-opiate analgesic developed by Shire Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. It was designed as a small molecule delivered via a once-daily transdermal patch system. The primary goal of the program was to provide a potent pain management option that avoided the addiction risks and restrictive regulatory scheduling associated with opioid analgesics. Although Shire announced plans to commence Phase 1 clinical testing in the first quarter of 2007, the candidate was subsequently removed from the company's development pipeline, indicating that its development has been terminated.
