Spectinomycin is an aminocyclitol antibiotic produced by *Streptomyces spectabilis*. It is primarily used for the treatment of gonorrhea caused by susceptible strains of *Neisseria gonorrhoeae*. Spectinomycin acts as a bacteriostatic agent, though it can be bactericidal at high concentrations. Its mechanism of action involves binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, specifically interacting with 16S rRNA helix 34, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis by blocking the translocation step. The drug is rapidly absorbed after intramuscular injection and excreted via glomerular filtration.
