Overview

Spent grain wax is a botanical extract obtained from the spent grains of barley (*Hordeum vulgare*), a byproduct of the brewing process. It is primarily utilized in dermatological and cosmetic formulations for its potent anti-inflammatory and skin-barrier-restoring properties. The wax is rich in essential fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid, and is often marketed as part of the active complex Stimu-tex AS™ alongside argan oil and shea butter. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of inflammatory mediators, including histamine and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1α and TNF-α, which helps alleviate symptoms of pruritus, erythema, and irritation. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in treating conditions like atopic dermatitis and intertrigo, as well as accelerating skin recovery following procedures such as fractional CO2 laser treatment and chemical peels.
