Overview

Spermaceti is a waxy substance obtained from the head cavity of the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) and, in smaller quantities, from other whales. Chemically, it consists mainly of cetyl palmitate and other esters of fatty acids with long-chain alcohols. Spermaceti has historically been used as a lubricant in medications to treat constipation associated with hemorrhoids and as an excipient in ointments and cerates. It was also widely used in cosmetics, fine candles, pomades, textile finishing agents, soaps, leather dressing products, and industrial lubricants. Most modern spermaceti is produced synthetically due to legal restrictions on whale-derived products[1][4][6]. Its mechanism of action when used pharmaceutically is primarily as a lubricant or protective agent.
