Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Spermatech male contraceptive is a non-hormonal small molecule drug candidate being developed by Spermatech AS. The drug functions as an ATP inhibitor, specifically targeting the metabolic pathways responsible for ATP production within sperm cells. By depleting the energy supply required for flagellar movement, the compound significantly reduces sperm motility, thereby preventing fertilization. This approach aims to provide a reversible and localized contraceptive option for men without the systemic side effects associated with hormonal therapies. The program is currently in the preclinical stage of development, involving collaborations with the University of Oslo, SINTEF, and Evotec AG.
