Overview

SPH5008-A is a small molecule therapeutic candidate being developed by Shanghai Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of arthritis-related diseases. It is a sustained-release formulation of lornoxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam class. Lornoxicam functions as a potent inhibitor of the enzymes cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which are responsible for the production of prostaglandins that mediate pain and inflammation. By utilizing a sustained-release delivery system, SPH5008-A aims to maintain therapeutic plasma concentrations over a longer period, potentially reducing dosing frequency and improving patient compliance compared to immediate-release lornoxicam. The drug is currently in Phase 2 clinical trials for indications such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
