Overview

Sphinxolide B is a naturally occurring marine macrolide compound classified as a diterpene lactone. It was originally isolated from the marine sponge Reidispongia coerulea and is notable for its complex structure and potent cytotoxic activity in preclinical models[2][8]. Sphinxolide B acts as a microfilament (actin) destabilizing agent and has been studied for its potential anticancer properties due to its ability to disrupt actin dynamics in cells[7][8]. Its mechanism involves binding to actin filaments and interfering with their stability—an action that can induce apoptosis or inhibit proliferation in cancer cells[7]. There are no approved therapeutic indications or marketed formulations of sphinxolide B; it remains an experimental compound primarily used in research settings.
