Overview

Spilanthol is a bioactive fatty acid amide (alkylamide) primarily derived from the plant *Acmella oleracea*, commonly known as the toothache plant. It is recognized for its diverse pharmacological properties, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and local anesthetic effects. Recent clinical research, such as that presented at the MDA Clinical & Scientific Conference 2026, has explored its potential as a dietary supplement to enhance neuromuscular performance. In a randomized controlled trial involving middle-aged men, daily supplementation with 17.5 mg of spilanthol, when combined with resistance exercise and balance training, significantly improved peak countermovement power and functional strength (as measured by the sit-to-stand test). The compound is thought to modulate neuromuscular function and potentially augment muscle strength and size, making it a candidate for addressing age-related declines in muscle performance and coordination.
