SpiN-Tec is a chimeric recombinant protein vaccine developed as a booster against COVID-19. It consists of a fusion protein (SpiN) that combines the Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein with the Nucleocapsid (N) protein. The vaccine is formulated with CTVad1, a squalene-based emulsion adjuvant similar to MF59. Unlike many first-generation COVID-19 vaccines that focus solely on the Spike protein, SpiN-Tec is designed to induce a broader and more durable immune response by targeting the more conserved Nucleocapsid protein, thereby eliciting robust T-cell immunity alongside neutralizing antibodies. This approach is intended to maintain efficacy against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern. The vaccine was developed by researchers at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil with support from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).
