SpinalPak is a specialized medical kit designed for the administration of spinal anesthesia, primarily developed and manufactured by B. Braun. It typically contains a hyperbaric solution of bupivacaine hydrochloride and dextrose, along with the necessary procedural components such as spinal needles, syringes, and skin preparation materials. Bupivacaine, the primary active pharmaceutical ingredient, is a long-acting local anesthetic of the amide class that functions by binding to and inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels on the internal surface of nerve cell membranes. This action prevents the influx of sodium ions, thereby stabilizing the membrane and blocking the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses. The inclusion of dextrose increases the baricity of the solution relative to cerebrospinal fluid, enabling clinicians to control the regional distribution of the anesthetic through patient positioning. SpinalPak is indicated for surgical procedures requiring subarachnoid block, including lower abdominal, urological, and lower extremity operations.
