Overview

**Spinosad** is a fermentation-derived spinosyn insecticide and ectoparasiticide composed predominantly of spinosyn A and spinosyn D. It acts primarily as an allosteric activator of insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, causing persistent neuronal excitation, paralysis, and death of susceptible arthropods. In human medicine, topical spinosad is marketed as Natroba for head-lice infestation and scabies; an ophthalmic 1.8% spinosad formulation, APT-001, is in Phase 2 development for blepharitis. Spinosad is also used in veterinary flea-control products and agricultural insecticides. ([accessdata.fda.gov](https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/appletter/2021/022408Orig1s010ltr.pdf))
