SPION-PEG-550 is an experimental nanoparticle formulation consisting of a superparamagnetic iron oxide core (SPION) functionalized with polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains of approximately 550 Daltons in molecular weight. This specific PEGylation is designed to enhance the biocompatibility, stability, and systemic circulation time of the iron oxide core. While SPIONs have traditionally been utilized as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), SPION-PEG-550 is being investigated for therapeutic applications, particularly in the treatment of obesity. Preclinical research suggests that these nanoparticles can exert anti-obesity effects by inducing mitochondrial biogenesis and promoting the browning of white adipose tissue, thereby increasing metabolic activity and energy expenditure. The iron oxide component may also influence cellular signaling pathways related to lipid metabolism and thermogenesis.
