Overview

Spiramycin adipate is the adipate salt of spiramycin, a 16-membered macrolide antibiotic produced by *Streptomyces ambofaciens*. It exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, specifically the 23S rRNA, which inhibits protein synthesis by blocking the translocation step. Spiramycin has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive bacteria, certain Gram-negative bacteria, and *Mycoplasma* species, and is also effective against the protozoan *Toxoplasma gondii*. While spiramycin is used in human medicine for respiratory infections and toxoplasmosis, the adipate salt is predominantly utilized in veterinary medicine for treating infections in livestock and poultry.
