Overview

This spirulina-based malaria vaccine is an investigational intranasal and oral vaccine developed by Lumen Bioscience for the prevention of malaria. The vaccine utilizes genetically engineered spirulina (Arthrospira platensis), a photosynthetic cyanobacterium, to express virus-like particles (VLPs) that display the NANP repeat region of the Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP). Administered as an intranasal prime followed by oral booster doses, the vaccine is designed to induce both systemic and mucosal immune responses, targeting the pre-erythrocytic stage of the parasite to prevent liver infection. The platform offers a low-cost, scalable, and shelf-stable alternative to traditional vaccines, potentially eliminating the need for cold-chain logistics and trained medical personnel in endemic regions.
