Spirulina fusiformis is a species of blue-green microalgae (cyanobacteria) that serves as a dense natural source of proteins, carotenoids, and essential micronutrients. It has been clinically investigated for its chemopreventive properties, particularly in the treatment of oral leukoplakia among tobacco chewers. In a landmark study conducted in Kerala, India, daily supplementation with 1 gram of Spirulina fusiformis for twelve months resulted in a significant complete regression of oral lesions compared to placebo, particularly in homogeneous leukoplakia. While it is an effective dietary source of vitamin A precursors, its therapeutic effects in oncology are thought to derive from its complex antioxidant profile rather than a simple increase in serum retinol levels.
