Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Spirulina liquid extract (commercially known as Spirulysat) is a phycocyanin-rich aqueous extract derived from the cyanobacteria Arthrospira platensis (spirulina). Developed by AlgoSource, this liquid extract is highly concentrated in phycocyanin and polysaccharides, which provide potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic-regulating properties. It has been clinically evaluated for its potential to alleviate oxidative stress, improve lipid and glucose metabolism, and protect against metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Additionally, a highly concentrated formulation of this extract (Phycocare) is being investigated in Phase II clinical trials for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in patients with gastrointestinal cancers.
