Overview

Spirulina peptidoglycan complex (SPGC) is a purified biological extract derived from the cell walls of the cyanobacterium *Arthrospira platensis* (Spirulina). Developed by Beijing Huashi Tianfu Biopharmaceutical Technology, SPGC is being investigated as an antineoplastic agent for the treatment of gastric cancer and gastric adenocarcinoma. The complex is thought to function as an immunomodulator, potentially activating Toll-like receptors (notably TLR2) on immune cells to stimulate a pro-inflammatory, anti-tumor response. Additionally, it has been shown to induce apoptosis in gastric cancer cells and inhibit tumor angiogenesis. Clinical development in China has progressed to Phase 2 trials for advanced gastric malignancies.
