Overview

SPK-601 (also known as LMV-601) is a small molecule inhibitor of phosphatidylcholine-specific phospholipase C (PC-PLC). It is a potassium salt of a tricyclic xanthate derivative that modulates lipid signaling pathways, specifically by blocking the conversion of phosphatidylcholine into 1,2-diacylglycerol (DAG) and phosphocholine. This inhibition interferes with downstream signaling cascades, including the activation of protein kinase C (PKC). SPK-601 has demonstrated preclinical antimicrobial and antiviral activity, with specific efficacy noted against herpes simplex virus (HSV). While it was previously explored for therapeutic applications in viral infections and inflammatory conditions, it is currently primarily utilized as a pharmacological research tool and is not known to be in active clinical development by any pharmaceutical company.
