The split-virion H1N1 vaccine refers to a class of inactivated influenza vaccines developed in response to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. These vaccines are produced by disrupting the influenza virus (specifically the A/California/7/2009 strain) with detergents, resulting in 'split' viral particles that contain the hemagglutinin (HA) antigen. This method reduces reactogenicity compared to whole-virion vaccines while maintaining immunogenicity. Multiple manufacturers, including GSK (Pandemrix), Sanofi Pasteur (Humenza, Panenza), and several Chinese companies like Sinovac, produced these vaccines in both adjuvanted (e.g., with AS03) and non-adjuvanted forms. They were primarily administered via intramuscular injection to provide protective immunity against pandemic H1N1 influenza, commonly known as swine flu.
