Spondias mombin extract is a natural substance derived from the Spondias mombin plant, a tropical tree belonging to the Anacardiaceae family. Traditionally used in various cultures for a wide range of ailments, the extract is rich in diverse phytochemicals including flavonoids, phenolic compounds (such as gallic acid, ellagic acid, and chlorogenic acid), saponins, alkaloids, tannins, and carotenoids. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its multifaceted pharmacological activities, including significant antioxidant effects through free radical scavenging and enhancement of antioxidant enzymes, and potent anti-inflammatory properties achieved by suppressing pro-inflammatory mediators like TNF-α and nitric oxide, and inhibiting COX-2. It also exhibits gastroprotective and anti-ulcer activities by stimulating mucus production, exerting antisecretory effects, and involving prostaglandins and ATP-sensitive potassium channels. Furthermore, research indicates antidiabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, uterotonic, antimicrobial (antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antihelminthic), and anticancer properties. These effects are attributed to the synergistic action of its complex phytochemical composition.
