Spongioflex is a sterile, human-derived demineralized allogeneic cancellous bone scaffold developed and manufactured by the Deutsches Institut für Zell- und Gewebeersatz (DIZG). It is designed as a biological alternative to synthetic implants for the partial replacement of the meniscus and other non-bony structures like the glenoid. The scaffold is produced through a process of decalcification and demineralization, resulting in a porous, sponge-like matrix that is hard when dry but becomes soft and pliable upon hydration. This pliability allows for easy intraoperative shaping and suturing. Spongioflex acts as a "cell-instructive" biocompatible scaffold that facilitates the migration and ingrowth of host cells, such as meniscal and synovial cells, into the tissue defect. It retains endogenous growth factors that promote the formation of new fibrocartilage without undergoing ossification, thereby aiming to restore joint homeostasis and postpone or prevent the onset of osteoarthritis.
