sporisorium cruentum

Sporisorium cruentum is a fungal species in the family Ustilaginaceae, order Ustilaginales, class Ustilaginomycetes. It is primarily known as a plant pathogen causing loose kernel smut in sorghum and related grasses. The fungus infects the floral tissues of host plants, leading to characteristic symptoms such as loose, bushy panicles and replacement of grains with sori containing fungal spores. Infection can result in stunted growth, reduced yield, and altered plant morphology. In addition to its agricultural impact, Sporisorium cruentum has been used as a non-standardized allergenic extract for diagnostic purposes in humans due to its ability to provoke allergic reactions through increased histamine release and cell-mediated immunity[1][3][4][5]. There are no known pharmaceutical or therapeutic uses beyond allergenic testing.
