SprayGel

SprayGel is a synthetic, sprayable adhesion barrier designed to prevent the formation of postoperative adhesions following laparoscopic or open abdominal and pelvic surgeries. It consists of two polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based precursor solutions that, when co-extruded through a specialized spray applicator, rapidly polymerize to form a flexible, adherent hydrogel. This hydrogel acts as a physical barrier, separating injured tissue surfaces during the critical 5- to 7-day healing period before being naturally resorbed and excreted by the kidneys. Developed by Confluent Surgical (later acquired by Covidien and subsequently Medtronic), SprayGel has been clinically evaluated in procedures such as myomectomy and has demonstrated a significant reduction in the incidence, extent, and severity of postoperative adhesions compared to standard surgical techniques.
