Sputnik M (Gam-COVID-vac M) is a recombinant adenovirus-based vaccine designed specifically for children and adolescents to build immunity against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19[9]. Like its parent vaccine Sputnik V, it consists of two components: 1. Component I: A recombinant adenoviral vector based on human adenovirus serotype 26 (rAd26) carrying the gene for the S-protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus 2. Component II: A vector based on human adenovirus serotype 5 (rAd5) carrying the gene for the S-protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus The vaccine is produced with the HEK293 cell line and is formulated as a liquid containing 10¹¹ viral particles per 0.5 mL dose[9]. The technological platform of adenovirus-based vectors allows for relatively quick development of new vaccines by modifying the initial carrier vector with genetic material from emerging viruses. This approach is designed to provoke a strong response from the human immune system.
