SQZ-PBMC-HBV is an autologous cell therapy developed by SQZ Biotechnologies for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The therapy utilizes the proprietary Cell Squeeze® mechanoporation platform to deliver HBV-specific antigens (specifically surface and core antigens) directly into the cytosol of a patient's peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). By bypassing traditional endosomal pathways, this technology aims to enhance the presentation of antigens via MHC Class I molecules, thereby robustly activating CD8+ T cells to target and eliminate HBV-infected hepatocytes. The program was part of a broader effort to achieve a functional cure for HBV. However, following the financial distress and subsequent liquidation of SQZ Biotechnologies, the assets, including the Cell Squeeze® platform, were acquired by STEMCELL Technologies, and clinical development of SQZ-PBMC-HBV was terminated.
