Overview

SQZ TAC T1D is an investigational red blood cell-derived cell therapy developed by SQZ Biotechnologies for the treatment of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Utilizing the company's proprietary Cell Squeeze microfluidic technology, the therapy involves engineering red blood cells to carry disease-specific autoantigens. These Tolerizing Antigen Carriers (TACs) are designed to be cleared by the body's natural processes, specifically by antigen-presenting cells in the liver and spleen, to induce antigen-specific immune tolerance. The mechanism of action aims to suppress the autoimmune attack on pancreatic beta cells by deleting autoreactive T cells, inducing anergy, and expanding regulatory T cells (Tregs) capable of bystander suppression. Following financial difficulties at SQZ Biotechnologies, the platform's assets were acquired by STEMCELL Technologies in early 2024, and the specific T1D program is no longer being actively pursued by the original developer.
