Overview

SR 25989 is a thienopyridine small molecule and the (R)-enantiomer of the anti-platelet drug clopidogrel. While clopidogrel is a potent P2Y12 antagonist used to prevent blood clots, SR 25989 lacks anti-aggregant activity. Instead, it exhibits anti-angiogenic properties by inducing the expression of thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), an endogenous inhibitor of angiogenesis. Preclinical studies have shown that SR 25989 inhibits endothelial cell proliferation and reduces the formation and growth of lung metastases in melanoma models by preventing neovascularization. It was primarily investigated by Sanofi for its potential in treating metastatic cancer.
