Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SR-37618 (also known as SRI-37618) is a novel small-molecule inducer of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) developed by Southern Research in collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham. It acts by activating the human HMOX1 promoter and enhancer, leading to robust upregulation of HO-1 expression. This induction is independent of oxidant stress and is partially mediated through the NRF2 pathway. SR-37618 has demonstrated cytoprotective and anti-apoptotic effects in vitro against cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity and phenylarsine oxide (PAO)-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress. In vivo, it successfully induces HO-1 expression in the kidneys of mice, showing therapeutic potential for the prevention and treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI), including arsenical-induced AKI, and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
