SR13800 is a small molecule inhibitor of the monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1), which is responsible for the transport of lactate across the cell membrane. Developed by researchers at institutions including the Moffitt Cancer Center and the UF Scripps Institute, SR13800 is being investigated for its potential in treating small cell lung cancer (SCLC). By inhibiting MCT1, the drug impairs glycolysis and triggers a rapid increase in intracellular lactate levels, leading to metabolic stress. In SCLC models, SR13800 has shown synthetic lethality when combined with PFKFB3 inhibitors like PFK15, resulting in the collapse of both glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and subsequent apoptosis.
