Overview

SR58878 is the active metabolite of amibegron (SR58611A), a selective beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist. Developed by Sanofi (formerly Sanofi-Aventis), the parent drug was investigated as a potential treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder. SR58878 is formed via the metabolism of amibegron and contributes to its pharmacological activity. The development program for amibegron reached Phase 3 clinical trials, where SR58878 plasma concentrations were monitored for pharmacokinetic and safety analyses. However, Sanofi discontinued the development of amibegron in 2008 after the drug failed to demonstrate significant clinical superiority over existing antidepressants in late-stage trials.
