Overview

SRL-172 is an inactivated whole cell vaccine derived from the non-tuberculous mycobacterium *Mycobacterium vaccae*. It was developed as an immunotherapeutic agent and BCG booster for tuberculosis (TB) prevention and as adjunctive therapy in cancer. The preparation consists of heat-killed *M. vaccae* cells administered intradermally. Its mechanism of action is believed to involve modulation of the immune response, enhancing cell-mediated immunity against *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* and potentially other antigens[2][7][9]. Clinical trials have evaluated its use as an adjunct to standard anti-TB chemotherapy in HIV-positive adults with pulmonary TB, where it was found to be safe but did not significantly improve survival or bacteriological outcomes[1][4]. In oncology, studies have explored its combination with chemotherapy for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and mesothelioma; while overall survival was not improved, some quality-of-life benefits were observed[3][5][8]. The manufacturing process for a related product (DAR-901) has since been developed from the SRL-172 master cell bank.
