SRP + injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) is an autologous combination therapy being evaluated by the University of Belgrade for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. This approach involves the application of i-PRF, a second-generation platelet concentrate derived from the patient's own blood, as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP). i-PRF is obtained through low-speed centrifugation, which preserves a high concentration of platelets and leukocytes within a liquid fibrin matrix. Once injected into the periodontal pocket, the i-PRF matrix provides a sustained release of various growth factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF). These factors work synergistically to promote angiogenesis, stimulate fibroblast proliferation, and enhance collagen synthesis, thereby facilitating the regeneration of periodontal tissues damaged by chronic inflammation.
