Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SS-POR11 is a topical live biotherapeutic product (LBP) consisting of a proprietary probiotic strain of *Cutibacterium acnes* (formerly *Propionibacterium acnes*). Developed by S-Biomedic in collaboration with DSM Nutritional Products, and subsequently part of the Beiersdorf portfolio following their acquisition of S-Biomedic in 2022, SS-POR11 is designed to treat acne vulgaris by modulating the skin microbiome. The therapy works by introducing a beneficial, non-inflammatory strain of *C. acnes* to displace pathogenic or pro-inflammatory phylotypes associated with acne. A primary focus of its clinical evaluation is the reduction of follicular porphyrins—metabolic byproducts of certain *C. acnes* strains that are known to induce oxidative stress and trigger inflammatory responses in the skin. By altering the microbial composition and reducing porphyrin levels, SS-POR11 aims to alleviate the inflammatory lesions characteristic of acne.
